Veterinary Technicians- let’s face it- YOU ROCK! I am sure you were reminded last week during National Veterinary Technician Week. But how can we express appreciation, recognition and honor you amazing individuals and all you do in just one little week?
One week isn’t enough to thank you for being the heartbeat of our practice. For everything that gets done in our hospital, you are a part of it. We often wonder where you all hide your capes?
One week isn’t enough to say thank you for sharing tears with owners because you, too, love their pet.
One week isn’t enough to say thank you for giving up your lunch breaks and holding your bladders just so our patients get the care, medication and food that THEY need.
One week isn’t enough to say thank you for putting up with the stresses of a hard day- and the difficult patients, clients (and yes, even co-workers & bosses!) you sometimes deal with. And even more thanks for doing this awesome thing where you help turn these difficult days around with your silly antics, songs, snacks and your magical power of picking each other up and reminding us we are all in this together.
One week isn’t enough to thank you for getting peed on, pooped on, bit, scratched, and everyone’s favorite, “anal glad juiced”,…..and despite that, not only coming back to work the next day but looking forward to it.
One week isn’t enough to say thank you for going home hairier than some of our patients.
One week isn’t enough to thank you for your never ending compassion for the ones that need it the most. In addition to your admirable technical skills, your hearts are just as talented. You treat our patients with the same love you treat your own at home. And this compassion can be seen by looking at your own animals at home- oftentimes those broken, forgotten and helpless souls that needed someone just like you in their lives, are lucky enough to cross paths with you. Whether they be missing an eye or a leg or be fighting for a chance at life, they have one thing that is perfect…..and that is you.
One week isn’t enough to thank you for the sacrifices you have made to help patients in their time of need. We recognize the many times you have sacrificed your own personal family time in order to help ensure a 4-legged family member gets to return to theirs.
One week isn’t enough to thank you for doing what is right, even when it hurts.
One week isn’t enough to thank you for being as passionate about the act of holding the paw of an old, dying dog as you are getting slathered with puppy breath kisses. Thank you for treating all patients as individuals and with compassion. Thank you for recognizing that those that are trying to bite and scratch you are just scared and confused and still need your help.
One week isn’t enough to thank you for being there for patients, for clients, and for your team. Thank you for spending more time with us each week than you do at home. You are not simply a team member, but our FAMILY.
One week isn’t enough to thank you for being YOU.
Even though I haven’t had the pleasure of working with all of you, I must thank you for being amazing advocates for those that can’t speak. You make a difference and have influenced us all more than you know. Our veterinary industry, our hospitals and our lives would not be the same without you. I cannot think of a greater group of people to have by our sides than Veterinary Technicians. We thank you…..every week of the year.
Kara Goheen (and the thousands of lives you have touched that can’t type)
